The prestigious French magazine Cahiers du Cinéma named it the best film of the year, and Volkskrant journalist Kevin Toma called it one of the best films he had ever seen.
In the Argentine town of Trenque Lauquen, Laura suddenly disappears without explanation. As her boyfriend and a colleague search for her, they uncover secrets she left behind: a hidden romantic correspondence, cryptic botanical clues, and traces of stories intertwined with her own. Told in twelve chapters spread across two parts, the film unfolds slowly. Trenque Lauquen moves fluidly between genres—part detective story, part road movie, part feminist reflection on autonomy and desire. The viewer is challenged to unravel Laura’s motives, while the film explores questions of identity, knowledge, and the way stories are told.

Eén film, bestaande uit twee delen, die in totaal vier uur duurt. Geen enkele distributeur durfde het aan deze film uit te brengen in Nederland, terwijl toonaangevende media lyrisch waren. Het gerenommeerde Franse magazine Cahiers du Cinéma riep de film uit tot beste van het jaar, en Volkskrant-journalist Kevin Toma noemde het een van de beste films die hij ooit zag.
In het Argentijnse stadje Trenque Lauquen verdwijnt Laura plotseling, zonder uitleg. Terwijl haar vriend en een collega haar zoeken, ontdekken ze geheimen die ze heeft achtergelaten: een verborgen romantische correspondentie, cryptische botanische aanwijzingen en sporen van verhalen die met het hare verweven zijn. Verteld in twaalf hoofdstukken, verdeeld over twee delen, ontvouwt de film zich langzaam. Trenque Lauquen beweegt zich tussen genres—deels detectiveverhaal, deels roadmovie, deels feministische reflectie op autonomie en verlangen. De kijker wordt uitgedaagd Laura’s motieven te doorgronden, terwijl de film vragen stelt over identiteit, kennis en hoe verhalen worden verteld.
