Cristian Mungiu (1968) is one of Romania’s most acclaimed filmmakers. After studying English Literature, he trained at the Film and Theatre Academy in Bucharest and made several short films before debuting with Occident (2002). His international breakthrough came with 4 Months, 3 Weeks and 2 Days, which won the Palme d’Or at Cannes in 2007. Since then, he has returned to Cannes with films including Beyond the Hills (Best Screenplay and Best Actresses, 2012) and Graduation (Best Director, 2016). He also served on the Cannes jury in 2013.
