A Javanese fisherman experiences a devastating volcanic eruption and is stranded on a deserted island. In search of food and water, he embarks on a hallucinatory journey that takes him ever deeper into the earth. Featuring stunning sound design by Oscar winner Nicolas Becker (Sound of Metal), director Carlos Casas brings together adventure, ecology and the overwhelming forces of nature. Krakatoa is a unique, psychedelic cinematic experience.
During the Q&A at the International Film Festival Rotterdam, Casas explained that he had chosen Roni Herliansyah as the lead actor for a reason. In 2018, Herliansyah survived the eruption of Anak Krakatau, which triggered a tsunami that killed hundreds of people.

Een Javaanse visser maakt een verwoestende vulkaanuitbarsting mee en strandt op een onbewoond eiland. Op zoek naar water en voedsel begint hij aan een hallucinerende reis die hem steeds dieper de aarde in voert. Tijdens de Q&A op het Filmfestival van Rotterdam vertelde Casas dat hij Roni Herliansyah niet zonder reden als hoofdrolspeler had gekozen. Herliansyah overleefde in 2018 de uitbarsting van Anak Krakatau, die een tsunami veroorzaakte waarbij honderden mensen om het leven kwamen.
