With his acclaimed debut film, Akinola Davies Jr. became the first Nigerian filmmaker to have a film selected for the official competition at Cannes. My Father’s Shadow is semi-autobiographical and inspired by Davies’ own childhood and the memories he shares with his brother Wale, who co-wrote the screenplay with him. Set against the political unrest of the time, the film weaves a personal family story with memories of Davies’ father and childhood.
