SECCOND FILM OF 013IFF 26 ANNOUNCED / TWEEDE FILM 013IFF 26 BEKEND
21 July 2026
Over the past few months, our programmer Sam has attended film festivals in Rotterdam, Berlin, Turnhout, and Cannes with one goal: to watch as many films as possible and curate an outstanding lineup for our own 013 International Film Festival (013IFF). We are proud to unveil the second title in this year’s festival programme: Cactus Pears, a subtle Indian love story that won the World Cinema Grand Jury Prize, one of the Sundance Film Festival’s most prestigious awards.
Anand, who works at a call center in Mumbai, returns to his hometown after the death of his father to observe the traditional ten-day mourning period. As his family increasingly pressures him to get married, he reconnects with his childhood friend Balya, who is struggling with similar expectations and desires. During the mourning period, their friendship gradually blossoms into a tender love. The result is a restrained, beautifully shot story about grief, identity, and queer love within a traditional rural community.
In its jury statement, the Sundance Film Festival wrote: “We cried, we laughed, and we longed to be loved in the same way. This is exactly what the world needs right now.”
“tender and subtle story of forbidden love and a poignant awakening in India”
