In heel wat landen zijn kindhuwelijken nog steeds een gruwelijke realiteit. Deze film schetst een schrijnend en tegelijk hoopvol beeld van de strijd tegen kindhuwelijken. Nawi was de officiële Keniaanse inzending voor de Oscars van 2025.

Vallentine Chelluget

Vallentine is a self-made filmmaker residing in Kisumu, Kenya. Val got her expertise through workshops, YouTube, and – despite her age of just 23 – years of field work. As a director, scriptwriter, and producer, Val has created various short films that got her jobs in the directing department of several award-winning Kenyan productions like “Deranged” or “Okethoree”, and the Kenyan Film Prize nominated “Wife for Hire”. Val also works as a trainer in the charity organization “Naweza Films” in Kisumu, which empowers youths through training in filmmaking and storytelling.

The Mastermind

Met The Mastermind kiest regisseur Kelly Reichardt, bekend van ingetogen meesterwerken als First Cow, verrassend voor de heistfilm, waarbij haar minimalistische stijl plaatsmaakt voor een spannend narratief vol menselijke nuance.

Kelly Reichardt

Filmmaker and screenwriter Kelly Reichardt (1964, USA) grew up in Miami and obtained her MFA from the School of the Museum of Fine Arts in Boston. Her debut feature River of Grass (1995) was nominated for the Grand Jury Prize at Sundance Film Festival and was listed by several critics as best film of the year. Due to a lack of financing, Reichardt continued shooting Super-8 short films instead, only to return to the feature format 12 years later with Old Joy (2006). This became the first American film to win the Tiger Award at IFFR. Reichardt continued to win prizes and earned major nominations with her subsequent films, including two Golden Lions, a Golden Bear and an Un Certain Regard nomination. Reichardt is known for her minimalist style of filming with a strong emphasis on mood and atmosphere.

Trenque Lauquen: Parte I & Parte II

Eén film, bestaande uit twee delen, die in totaal vier uur duurt. Geen enkele distributeur durfde het aan deze film uit te brengen in Nederland, terwijl toonaangevende media lyrisch waren. Het gerenommeerde Franse magazine Cahiers du Cinéma riep de film uit tot beste van het jaar, en Volkskrant-journalist Kevin Toma noemde het een van de beste films die hij ooit zag.

Laura Citarella

Laura Citarella is one of South America’s most original and distinctive film voices. Born in La Plata, she graduated in film directing from the Universidad del Cine in Buenos Aires, where she now teaches and leads screenwriting workshops. In addition to writing and directing her own work, she is an acclaimed film producer with the renowned El Pampero Cine production company, and has also worked as an actor.

Citarella gained international recognition with her third feature, La mujer de los perros (2015), co-directed with Verónica Llinás, which was selected for several major festivals including IFFR 2015. Her latest film, Trenque Lauquen (2022), further cemented her status and was selected for IFFR 2023.

Cláudia Varejão | Maha Haj

Cláudia Varejão (1980, Portugal) was educated in film directing and camerawork in Lisbon, São Paulo and Berlin. Besides being a filmmaker, she works as a cinematographer on documentaries. She is the author of the short film trilogy Fim de semana (2007), Um dia frio (2009) and Luz da manhã (2012). In 2016 she made her feature debut, Ama-san. Her documentary Amor fati (2020) was selected for IFFR 2021. Varejão also developed a career as a photographer and creates video projects for theatre, performances and fine arts. (more…)

Memories in a Frame: Kora – Upshot

Het MOOOV Filmfestival opende dit jaar voor het eerst met een programma van twee krachtige korte films onder de noemer Memories in a Frame: Kora – Upshot. Beide films lieten een diepe indruk achter op het aanwezige publiek. De opening bewees dat korte films snel complexe emoties, gelaagde verhalen en maatschappelijke thema’s weten over te brengen.

Left-Handed Girl

Tijdens Cannes 2025 groeide Left-Handed Girl uit tot een van de meest besproken films van het festival. Het indrukwekkende debuut van Shih-Ching Tsou werd geprezen om zijn verstilde vertelstijl, subtiele observaties en krachtige vertolkingen.

Shih-Ching Tsou

Shih-Ching Tsou is an independent filmmaker known for her work as a director, writer and producer. She co-directed Take Out (2004) and produced Tangerine (2015), The Florida Project (2017) and Red Rocket (2021), with premieres at Cannes. Her solo directorial debut, Left-Handed Girl, will be released in 2025. A Taiwan native based in New York, Tsou is known for her authentic, character-driven story-telling, a long-time collaborator of Sean Baker.
