Fritz Lang (1890–1976) was an Austrian-German director and screenwriter and one of the most important filmmakers of German Expressionism. He became internationally known for the groundbreaking science-fiction classic Metropolis (1927) and the influential thriller M (1931). He later made films such as Scarlet Street and The Big Heat in Hollywood, becoming an important influence on the film noir genre.
