Metropolis is considered one of the greatest classics in film history. The film is set in a futuristic city where society is divided into two worlds. Above ground, the wealthy upper class lives in luxury, while workers live deep beneath the city, keeping the machines running day and night. Freder, the son of city leader Johann Fredersen, grows up in the world of the wealthy. When he meets Maria, a worker’s daughter who is devoted to her community, he discovers how harsh life beneath the city really is. He begins to oppose the vast inequality and tries to make his father understand what is happening.
In 2027, Fritz Lang’s futuristic masterpiece Metropolis will be exactly 100 years old. To mark this anniversary, film journalist and composer Kevin Toma has written a brand-new live soundtrack for the film, which he will perform himself at Cinecitta. Toma is best known as a film journalist for de Volkskrant, but has also been composing contemporary music for silent films for many years, performing his scores live in cinemas across the Netherlands. He has composed soundtracks commissioned by, among others, IFFR, IDFA, Film Fest Gent and Lowlands. In 2025, he toured the Netherlands with his score for F.W. Murnau’s Nosferatu (1922).
Describing his musical approach, Toma says: “Expect a hypnotic and immersive fusion of piano, synths, beats, samples and soundscapes that will not only create a bridge between the mechanical and the human, but also between this century-old film and today’s cinema audience.”
Metropolis geldt als een van de grootste klassiekers uit de filmgeschiedenis. De film speelt zich af in een futuristische stad waarin de samenleving is verdeeld in twee werelden. Boven de grond leeft de rijke bovenklasse in luxe, terwijl de arbeiders diep onder de stad wonen en dag en nacht de machines draaiende houden. Freder, de zoon van stadsleider Johann Fredersen, groeit op in de wereld van de rijken. Wanneer hij Maria ontmoet, een arbeidersdochter die zich inzet voor haar gemeenschap, ontdekt hij hoe zwaar het leven onder de stad werkelijk is. Hij begint zich tegen de grote ongelijkheid te verzetten en probeert zijn vader duidelijk te maken wat er aan de hand is.
In 2027 is het futuristische meesterwerk Metropolis van regisseur Fritz Lang precies 100 jaar oud. Ter gelegenheid van dit jubileum schreef filmjournalist en componist Kevin Toma een gloednieuwe live soundtrack voor de film, die hij in Cinecitta zelf zal uitvoeren. Toma is vooral bekend als filmjournalist voor de Volkskrant, maar maakt al jaren eigentijdse muziek voor zwijgende films, die hij live uitvoert in filmtheaters door het hele land. Hij componeerde soundtracks in opdracht van onder meer IFFR, IDFA, Film Fest Gent en Lowlands. In 2025 toerde hij door Nederland met zijn score voor F.W. Murnaus Nosferatu (1922).
Over zijn muzikale benadering zegt Toma: “Verwacht een hypnotiserende, meeslepende versmelting van pianospel, synths, beats, samples en soundscapes die niet alleen een brug zal slaan tussen het machinale en het menselijke, maar ook tussen de honderd jaar oude film en het bioscooppubliek van nu.”
