Our understanding of the Holocaust has been shaped to a large extent by the many fiction films made about it. The third title announced for 013IFF is Holofiction, a unique essay film composed of thousands of clips from these films. By re-editing this material into a new cinematic narrative, the film reveals recurring patterns in the way the Holocaust has been represented on screen. Holofiction explores how these images have evolved over time and how they continue to shape the way we remember and understand this history.
Holofiction had its world premiere at the Venice International Film Festival, where it attracted considerable attention as a bold and innovative cinematic reflection. International film critics praised its inventive editing and the way it gives familiar images new meaning and resonance.
On Tuesday, 21 October, director Michal Kosakowski will travel to Tilburg for 013IFF. Following the screening, he will join Filmkrant journalist Hugo Emmerzael for an in-depth conversation about the making of Holofiction, the power of cinematic images, and the creative choices behind this remarkable essay film.
Ons beeld van de Holocaust wordt voor een groot deel gevormd door de vele fictiefilms die erover zijn gemaakt. De derde titel van 013IFF is Holofiction, een unieke essayfilm opgebouwd uit duizenden fragmenten uit deze films. Door deze beelden op een nieuwe manier te monteren, legt de film terugkerende patronen bloot. Holofiction laat zien hoe filmbeelden zich door de jaren heen hebben ontwikkeld en welke invloed zij hebben op de manier waarop wij deze geschiedenis herinneren en begrijpen.
Holofiction ging in wereldpremière tijdens het Filmfestival van Venetië en kreeg daar veel aandacht als een gedurfde en vernieuwende filmische reflectie. Internationale filmjournalisten prezen de unieke montagevorm en de manier waarop de film bestaande beelden opnieuw laat spreken.
Op dinsdag 21 oktober reist regisseur Michal Kosakowski af naar Tilburg voor 013IFF. Na afloop van de vertoning gaat hij met Filmkrant-journalist Hugo Emmerzael in gesprek over de totstandkoming van Holofiction, de kracht van filmbeelden en de keuzes achter deze essayfilm.
