My Father’s Shadow

Folarin en zijn jongste zoons Akin en Remi worstelen met hun onderlinge band terwijl ze door een Lagos navigeren dat op de rand van een democratische crisis staat. Naarmate meer over Folarins leven aan het licht komt, lopen ook de spanningen binnen het gezin op. My Father’s Shadow is de semi-autobiografische debuutfilm van Akinola Davies Jr., geïnspireerd op zijn eigen jeugd en herinneringen aan zijn vader en broer Wale, met wie hij het scenario schreef.

Akinola Davies Jr.

Akinola Ogunmade-Davies Jr. is a multidisciplinary filmmaker, writer and video artist whose work bridges West Africa and the UK. His films explore themes such as community, race, spirituality, identity and gender, combining indigenous narratives with contemporary perspectives. Drawing on personal and collective memory, he experiments with form to tell stories that connect different generations and communities.

Metropolis

In 2027 is het futuristische meesterwerk Metropolis precies 100 jaar oud. Ter gelegenheid van dit bijzondere jubileum schreef filmjournalist en componist Kevin Toma een gloednieuwe live soundtrack, die hij tijdens de voorstelling in Cinecitta zelf zal uitvoeren.

Fritz Lang

Fritz Lang (1890–1976) was an Austrian-German director and screenwriter and one of the most important filmmakers of German Expressionism. He became internationally known for the groundbreaking science-fiction classic Metropolis (1927) and the influential thriller M (1931). He later made films such as Scarlet Street and The Big Heat in Hollywood, becoming an important influence on the film noir genre.

Amores Perros

Amores Perros is een rauwe en intense mozaïekvertelling over liefde, verlies en geweld in Mexico-Stad en betekende de internationale doorbraak van regisseur Alejandro González Iñárritu. Tijdens 013IFF vertonen we deze moderne klassieker. Voorafgaand aan de voorstelling neemt filmjournalist Noa Johannes u mee in haar visie op de film.

Alejandro G. Iñárritu

Alejandro González Iñárritu is an Oscar-winning Mexican filmmaker whose distinctive and ambitious films have earned worldwide acclaim. He made his feature debut with Amores Perros, followed by acclaimed films including 21 Grams, Babel, Biutiful, Birdman and The Revenant. His work often explores interconnected lives, human vulnerability and moral dilemmas.

Iñárritu has received numerous international awards throughout his career. He won the Academy Award for Best Director for Birdman and The Revenant, and received the Best Director prize at the Cannes Film Festival for Babel. With his bold visual style and emotionally intense storytelling, he has established himself as one of the most celebrated filmmakers of his generation.

Fatherland

In 1949 reizen Thomas Mann en zijn dochter Erika door een verdeeld Duitsland, terwijl de spanningen tussen hen steeds verder oplopen. Fatherland is de nieuwe film van Oscarwinnaar Paweł Pawlikowski, die in Cannes opnieuw werd bekroond voor Beste Regie.

Paweł Pawlikowski

Multi awarded Pawel Pawlikowski is a Polish filmmaker, who garnered much acclaim for award-winning documentaries in the 1990s and for his feature films Last Resort (2001) and My Summer of Love (2004) which both won a BAFTA, and many other awards. In 2011, he made a film loosely adapted from Douglas Kennedy’s novel The Woman in the Fifth. In 2015 his masterpiece Ida, won the Academy Award for Foreign Language Film, becoming the first Polish film to do so. His most recent film, Cold War, earned him the Best Director Prize at the Festival de Cannes 2018 and three nominations for Best Director, Best Photography and Best Foreign Language Film at the 91st Academy Awards. It also won five awards at the 2018 European Film Awards including Best Film, Best Director and Best Screenwriter.

Everytime

Een tragedie brengt een moeder, haar dochter en een tienerjongen samen. Terwijl ze worstelen met schuldgevoelens en vergeving, maakt het onwaarschijnlijke drietal een reis naar Tenerife. Onder de warme gloed van de zon beginnen verleden en heden zich langzaam met elkaar te vermengen. De film is met grote precisie in beeld gebracht door Gregory Oke (cameraman van onder meer Aftersun).

Sandra Wollner

Born 1983 in Leoben, Austria, is an Austrian film director and screenwriter. She studies theatre, film and media studies. Besides her studies she works as an editor and director of short films and short documentaries. From 2012 she studies documentary film directing at the Film Academy Baden-Württemberg. She shoots her first feature film Das Unmögliche Bild exclusively on 16mm material. Her debut film receives numerous awards, including the German Film Critics’ Award. With her second feature film, The Trouble with Being Born, she wins the Special Jury Prize in the Berlinale section “Encounters” and the “Grand Diagonale Prize for Best Feature” in 2020.
